About me

My name is Daniel Reeders, and I have been working in health promotion for two decades.  I learned health promotion on the job, through an informal but in-depth apprenticeship, and this left me with a fierce appreciation of working knowledge and reflective practice. My qualifications are a BA and LLB from the University of Melbourne and a Grad Dip in Public Health from Flinders University.

My career has involved research and practice in social marketing and communication strategy around health issues like HIV, cancer screening and sexual and reproductive health. I’m also known for innovative community-based and academic research projects focusing on neglected and emerging areas of practice. I have worked for the Victorian AIDS Council, Living Positive Victoria, Cancer Council Victoria, the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health, the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society, the Centre for Social Impact, and the National Association of People with HIV Australia.

I’m currently studying in the PhD program at the ANU School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet).

Lived experience

When I write about mental health and certain forms of community health (e.g. queer health and HIV prevention) I am writing from a position of lived experience, although I am often juggling other subject positions like activist, practitioner and researcher. I am a queer and nonbinary person with disability consisting of an ‘alphabet soup’ of mental conditions including ADHD (mixed type), bipolar type II, complex PTSD and disordered eating. These are long-standing conditions.

Disclosures

I have a policy of continuous disclosure by keeping this page updated.

I would like to acknowledge the Australian Government Research Training Scheme and the Endeavour Postgraduate Research Fellowships for funding my PhD research.

I have worked on projects funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA), the Victorian Government Department of Health (DH) and via unrestricted educational grants from Merck (2006), Roche (2008), Dynamix International (2018), Gilead (in 2004, 2006, 2010 and 2020–ongoing), ViiV Healthcare Australia (2016, 2020–ongoing).

I am currently leading one project funded by Gilead (2025-), partnering with Gilead to organise a conference for HIV peers (mid-2025), and working on an advocacy campaign to promote quality of life for people with HIV that is funded by an unrestricted educational grant from ViiV (2023-present).

In 2021, I attended the virtual IAS conference as a guest of the International AIDS Society. In 2022, I attended the International AIDS Conference 2022 with funding from ViiV Healthcare Australia. In 2023 and 2024 I organised symposiums at the Australasian HIV Conference in partnership with ViiV Healthcare Australia.
